Elgon Exposure Trip

Showcasing Kapchorwa’s Adventure Sport Potential

 Elgon Exposure Trip 2022

From 20th to 22nd of May 2022, Run Kapchorwa staged a packed weekend of outdoor sports activities to showcase the potential for adventure tourism on Mount Elgon.

A total of 21 Ugandan tour operators travelled to Uganda’s ‘Land of Champions’ for the weekend and were hosted in the event village at Home of Friends guesthouse. Tourism stakeholders signed up online to claim the limited spaces available for this fantastic opportunity and were rewarded with three days of free organised activities. Participants were able to explore Kapchorwa’s stunning countryside and unique culture with guided sessions including trail running, mountain biking, hiking and cultural storytelling.

A significant number of Elgon tourism stakeholders also participated in the event, either by exhibiting their product offer (including multi-day Mount Elgon treks and abseiling) in a dedicated exhibition space at the venue or by playing a part in the event team.

The event was enabled by Private Sector Foundation Uganda, Uganda Tourism Association, Mastercard Foundation, Home of Friends Guesthouse, Red Dirt Uganda, Netherlands Enterprise Agency and Adventure Tourism Uganda.

Running the Champions Trail

An early start for a sunrise trail run at 7am on Saturday morning. Run Kapchorwa local guides David and Isaac led the group on a guided run along the popular Champion’s Trail which offers a steady climb to 2000m above sea level. Participants completed a 4km or 7km loop, depending on their fitness level.

An insight into the Sebei Culture

Local cultural group, Sebei Storytellers gave an evening campfire performance to share aspects of the Sebei culture before holding a Q&A session with the group.

Mountain Biking on the Waterfall Loop

After a mountain bike skills clinic and briefing from Red Dirt Uganda and Bike Kapchorwa, a cycling proficiency test was carried out to check on bike handling skills. Two group rides then took place on the ‘Waterfall Loop’ where riders were able to sample Kapchorwa’s challenging mountainous terrain, enjoy stunning views of neighbouring mountains and pause for a break at Kaptokwoi waterfall.

The Kapchorwa Nature Walk took place on Saturday evening and a short hike brought participants to a local Cave Complex.

One of the major highlights of the weekend: a spontaneous meet & greet with our near neighbour and Olympic steeplechase champion, Peruth Chemutai
